#2: Participate in a Social Media Awareness Campaign:
Social media is creating a new generation of awareness campaigns. Organizations use these campaigns to raise awareness on various issues and/or causes. They are able to do this by engaging their audiences. Audiences are not only passive recievers of information, but are also actively involved in 'spreading the word'. They 'like', 're-tweet', 'comment' and 'share' campaign content.
One of the most popular social media campaigns that was organized this year is "the ALS ice bucket challenge". This challenge involved dumping a bucket of ice water on someone's head to promote awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and encouraging donations to research.
Watch Hayden's Ice Bucket Challenge video below and read his statement on participating in this campaign:
"I participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge after I did some research investigating its purpose. At first glance, it appeared to be just a clever social marketing strategy. However, after finding out its origin and the purpose of the ice bucket, I decided that it was a cause that I was willing to support."
